Whittingham Hospital
HTA Architects 2005

As part of a wider strategy, several sites occupied by former hospitals were released by the government to be regenerated and developed into low to medium density housing estates.

The former Whittingham Hospital is located on a remote site surrounded by dense forest. With several existing buildings scattered around the estate, the idea here was to create various communities with slightly different character but with a common overriding agenda: Grow your own food, live healthily and work where you live. This was before developers talked about sustainable communities.
The scheme did not pass the first round.

Site area: 24 hectare
Total units: 750 houses
